Checking for Conflicts
The following types of hardware have been reported to cause conflicts:
Some internal modems and add-in I/O cards.
Some network cards set to interrupt 3 or 4

Check the device manager to pinpoint possible conflicts. Instructions for checking the device manager for Windows 95 and Windows NT are provided below.

Windows 95 Instructions:

  1. Right-click on My Computer
  2. Select Properties
  3. Select the Device Manager Tab
  4. Look at the list of devices and check for any red, yellow or white symbols. These symbols indicate hardware conflicts. Refer to the Microsoft Resource Manual for more information on how to resolve these conflicts.

Windows NT 3.51 and 4.0 Instructions:

  1. Click on Start/Administrative Tools/Event Viewer
  2. Check the Event Viewer Log to see if a service has not started for Wintab, or if there are any conflicts reported here.

Slow down the system

Note: This procedure is only recommended if you are experienced working with hardware. Some motherboards have a speed select jumper that allows you to manually control the base clock. If you slow the clock down and the digitizer starts to work, there is still a chance you will need to use a Wintab driver to get the digitizer working correctly.

Customers have reported that switching the system's clock rate from 200/166mhz to 133mhz slows the response rate down so the communication between the digitizer and processor are in sync.

Verify hardware

Make sure the cable is the correct type and not damaged. Check the Owner Manual for your specific digitizer to confirm what type of cable is recommended. Most digitizers will use RS232 Cable pin-outs.

Use a digitizer test utility and check your hardware. Most supported digitizers have a manufacturer test utility to see if it is working correctly. (For example, CalComp has one on their Web site for the Summagraphics and CalComp digitizers.)

Alternate solutions

Set the digitizer to an emulation mode like MM1201, and use a driver appropriate for that mode. Sometimes this will allow the digitizer to work when the internal ADI drivers fail.

In some cases, obtaining a good Windows driver that supports AutoCAD products will resolve digitizer problems. Consult your AutoCAD Resource guide for a list of companies that manufacture digitizer drivers.

Note: Although Autodesk cannot recommend specific driver manufacturers, many of our customers have reported that Digitizer Technology, listed in the AutoCAD Resource guide, provides a Virtual Tablet driver that supports most commonly used digitizers.

If you had difficulty understanding this document, or if this document did not resolve your problem, we would like to know. Please outline your problem on the document itself, and fax it to Autodesk Product Support: +1 (415) 507- 5300 ATT: Document Control. We will consider your comments in our next revision of the document. Thank you.
